RENUNGAN AKHIR TAHUN: Karakteristik Kepemimpinan Nelson Mandela (2)

Ketika Nelson Mandela masih muda, ia pernah menganut nasionalisme ekstrim yang hanya memperjuangkan kaum kulit hitam dan tidak mau memberi tempat pada ras lain di Afrika Selatan, tetapi hal ini berubah sejalan dengan kematangan pengetahuan dan kepribadian Mandela. Perubahan ini rupanya membawa efek positif bagi Mandela.
Pada pertengahan abad ke 20 bertumbuh subur dua jenis nasionalisme di kalangan masyarakat Afrika Selatan. Pertama, Nasionalisme Afrika Murni yang berpusat di sekitar semboyan Marcu Garvey yang berbunyi, “Lemparkan orang kulit putih ke laut.” Jenis nasionalisme ini bersifat ekstrim dan ultra revolusioner.
Kedua, Nasionalisme Afrika Multi Rasial yang memperjuangkan kesamaan derajat dan kedudukan, keadilan dan kemakmuran. Para pengikut paham ini bukan hanya orang kulit hitam, tetapi juga ras lainnya, yaitu kulit putih dan berwarna, termasuk orang India. Mereka percaya bahwa Afrika Selatan adalah milik semua orang – tanpa pandang warna kulit – yang tinggal di Afrika Selatan.
Nasionalisme Afrika Murni inilah yang diyakini oleh Nelson Mandela pada masa mudanya hingga ketika ia menjadi anggota Liga Pemuda African National Congress (ANC). Hal ini sangat dipengaruhi oleh lingkungan pergaulannya yang banyak didominasi oleh masyarakar kulit hitam di Transkei.
Secara perlahan keyakinan Mandela mulai bergeser. Proses ini bermula ketika ia menjadi anggota ANC pada tahun 1944 dan bergabung dengan Liga Pemudanya serta meluasnya pengalaman politik dengan organisasi dan golongan politik lain membuat Mandela mulai buka mata.
Permulaan di ANC dan di Liga Pemuda, Mandela berusaha membersihkan ANC dari orang dan unsur-unsur komunis yang melekat di ANC karena hal itu dianggap oleh Mandela bisa menjadi faktor yang memperlemah Nasionalisme Afrika Murni. Salah satu cara yang diusulkannya adalah agar ANC mengeluarkan orang-orang komunis tersebut. Usul ini ditolak para pengurus ANC yang lain. Mereka mempertahankan kebijakan itu atas dasar bahwa ANC sejak dari permulaan dibentuk bukan sebagai suatu partai dengan satu mazhab pemikiran politik, akan tetapi sebagai suatu parlemen rakyat Afrika yang memberi tempat pada orang-orang dari berbagai keyakinan politik. Semua kelompok ini dipersatukan oleh tujuan bersama yaitu untuk pembebasan nasional.
Pada akhirnya Mandela mengikuti pandangan ini dan sejak itu selalu dipengangnya. Hal ini terbukti dengan tidak ikutnya Mandela ke dalam sekelompok orang yang memiliki paham Nasionalis Afrika Murni yang memisahkan diri dari ANC dan membentuk Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC) pada tahun 1958.
Di balik perubahan pahamnya, Mandela sebenarnya telah melihat suatu kenyataan yang tak bisa diingkari bahwa berbagai kelompok rasial akan tetap ada di Afrika Selatan. Perubahan paham seperti ini menyebabkan Mandela bisa diterima oleh berbagai golongan politik. Sebagai akibatnya, hal ini memperkuat posisi Mandela sendiri.
