Lahir dengan kodrat perempuan dengan sendirinya membawa pembatasan dalam dirinya termasuk dari budaya dan agama. Dilahirkan sebagai perempuan membawa stigmatisasi tersendiri.
Secara struktural, perempuan dipandang sebagai makhluk kelas dua. Dari dunia kerja yang berat sebelah seperti diskriminasi berdasarkan paras dan bentuk tubuh sampai pada pelecehan seksual dan harga diri di berbagai tempat.
Rezim politik dan militer sering menggunakan bahu dan rahim perempuan sebagai sandaran dan bahan tertawaan. Pangkalan militer identik dengan sexual entertainment dan rape as weapon sudah lazim dalam peperangan dan sosial unrest.
Dalam perspektif budaya dan agama perempuan terbungkam dalam struktur sosial patriarkhat.
Di era globalisasi yang menjanjikan kemudahan pada saat yang sama posisi perempuan kian terjepit.
Atas nama kemajuan dan modernitas sering kali tubuh perempuan dilacurkan dan diinjak-injak dalam kerangka agama, politik, dan hubungan antarmanusia. Kapitalisasi tubuh perempuan merupakan penjinakan perempuan secara semena-mena dan tidak bermartabat.
Perdagangan anak dan perempuan menjadi noktah hitam globalisasi di berbagai benua. Sementara perempuan sendiri kian terdesak tidak banyak yang memperjuangkan nasib perempuan.
Keputusan-keputusan politik yang dilahirkan para pembuat kebijakan lebih pro patriarkhat dan menindas perempuan.
Perempuan kritis di berbagai belahan dunia senantiasa menghadapi marginalisasi atas nama politik, tradisi, budaya, dan religiusitas.
Pada situasi yang sama, kutuk dan tulah penyakit modern seperti merebaknya HIV/AIDS telah menempatkan perempuan sebagai korban sekaligus kambing hitam yang utama.
Perempuan ditempatkan sebagai anjing penggoda yang menyebabkan merebaknya penyakit bertulah itu.
Dalam situasi yang sedikit berbeda banyak kaum homoseksual dan transeksual yang hidup dalam kegelapan lemari baju. Mereka mengalami hidup dalam kesempitan dan kesunyian karena pandangan sempit mudah menyebut si lesbian atau si pengidap AIDS.
Kitab Suci pun bahkan memunyai andil besar dalam stigmatisasi tersebut dengan proheteroseksual.
Pemerkosaan ekologi tidak terlepas dari globalisasi ekonomi dan politik. Lingkungan diperah habis-habisan demi memuaskan nafsu memiliki dan negara-negara Dunia Ketiga menjadi lahan perahan yang tiada habis-habisnya.
Di tanah perahan perempuan memberikan bahu dan rahim mereka demi ideologi politik dan ekonomi dengan tenaga dan air mata bahkan darah mereka. Persenggamaan patriarkhi dengan industri-industri dan kolonialisme membiakkan monster ekonomi yang mengabaikan kelestarian ciptaan.
Buku ini memberikan perspektif baru mengenai perempuan dan pembangunanisme yang cenderung termarginalkan. Jika Amerika Latin mengenal teologi pembebasan, perempuan Asia sebenarnya dapat bangkit untuk keluar dari kungkungan.

Nice article that you posted in OTTI, this is a meaningful book to read and to understand. In many occasions that abuses of human right and women were occurring both in the under developed or developed world. The abuse justification were not only illogical but abusing holy scripts to justify their abuses in the name of God.
It is sad that many of powerful people or more advanced society tend to abuse the powerless and less advanced society, these kind of behaviors happened over and over through out the history of mankind.
When are we all going to learn how to behave better as global society? with equal social justice and fairness for all regardless of their status, race, and religion.

It’s very sad, even in the society we perceive it as an advanced civilization like in the United States, the abuse and violent toward women still happen and it was done collectively such as gang rape that happened recently in Richmond, California. There were about 10 people who witness what was going on, however no one reported to the police.
There is a “code of silence” among society that let this uncivilized action happened. According to Francesco Vincent Serpico, a retired New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer who is most famous for testifying against police corruption in 1971, the code of silence is usually either kept because of threat of force, or danger to oneself, or being branded as a traitor or an outcast within the unit or organization as the experiences of the police whistleblower.
To battle the code of silence, the society at large including government officials have to be able to provide protection, and acceptance to those who have the tendency to conform with the code of silence. It’s our society duty to convince them that they are not a part of violence members, they will not be.
